Welcome to the page of the Graduate Program in Dental Sciences of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PPGCO). The Program is the result of the restructuring of the Graduate Program in Oral Pathology of UFRN and of a merger with the field of focus in Dentistry of the Graduate Program in Collective Health of UFRN.

 

The PPGCO consists of three fields of focus: (1) Oral Pathology and Stomatology; (2) Dental Clinical Practices; and (3) Oral Biology and Experimental Biopathology, with the mission of qualifying professionals for teaching and research in the clinical and basic areas of Dentistry and related areas, also contributing to the education/training of professionals to improve the quality of health services.

 

In the field of focus in Oral Pathology and Stomatology, the student has the possibility to develop skills in the diagnosis of diseases of the stomatognathic system at both clinical and histopathological level. In the field of focus in Dental Clinical Practices, the student develops activities with a view to acquiring skills directed at the treatment of diseases of the stomatognathic system, in addition to having the possibility of developing skills in experimental research using in vitro and in vivo models, allowing the construction of researches that permeate both models, strengthening the possibility of developing materials and techniques with scientific evidence and clinical applicability. In the field of focus in Oral Biology and Experimental Biopathology, the student has the possibility of developing skills in experimental research using in vitro and in vivo models, with a greater foundation in laboratory techniques, facilitating the development of research with greater scientific impact.

 

The lines of research of the three fields of focus for the master’s degree and doctoral degree programs are described in the following table.

Oral Pathology and Stomatology

Clinical, morphological and molecular studies of the pathologies of the bucomaxillofacial complex

Basic and applied research on inflammatory, reactional, cystic and neoplastic lesions that affect the stomatognathic apparatus.

Epidemiology, diagnosis and integrated treatment in Dental Clinical Practices

Studies whose purpose is to analyze oral health problems related to individuals and communities, as well as to evaluate prevention and treatment methods.

Oral Biology and Experimental Biopathology

Biopathology of the tissues of the buccomaxillofacial complex

Studies of the morphofunctional characteristics and biological events of craniofacial tissues and their plasticity in response to physical, chemical and biological factors, as well as in vivo studies in animal models capable of reproducing the biopathological phenomena of the diseases and evaluating the effect of different agents and therapeutics procedures in these models.

 

The curriculum structure of the PPGCO is based on the flexibilization and focused on the training/education of teachers/professors and researchers, in addition to the specific training/education of the fields of focus. The mandatory and optional courses for the completion of the programs are divided into common core and specific, as detailed below.

 

The common core courses are those focused on teaching and research training, which must be taken by all students. The table below shows the common core courses available for the master’s and doctoral degree programs.

The purpose of the specific courses is to enable the student to develop his/her research projects properly, which will have as products, publications in qualified journals and his/her own dissertation or thesis. The general idea is that this set of courses is more directed to the theoretical knowledge necessary for the development of the end-of-program project and articulated to the program’s lines of research. The minimum number of credits required for the complete training/education of the student depends upon the program (master's degree or doctoral degree). The selection of these credits by the student is based on the Individual Plan of Study proposed by the supervisor/advisor and discussed with the student according to his/her line of research and to his/her object of study. At the discretion of the advisor/supervisor and of the student, the student is allowed to take as many credits as are necessary for a good conduct of the research project and for the qualification in the field of teaching/lecturing. Courses from other graduate programs may also be part of the Plan. The table below indicates the minimum number of credits in courses required for the completion of the master's degree and doctoral degree programs.
