STUDY OF THE OCCURRENCE AND ASSOCIATION OF ACTINIC CHEILITIS IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes mellitus; Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders; Actinic Cheilitis.
Diabetes Mellitus is a global endemic condition that affects millions of people worldwide and has increasing incidence rates, especially in developing countries, such as Brazil. Approximately 90% of DM cases are type 2 (DM2), which is characterized by insulin resistance, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. Studies have shown that patients with DM2 have a higher risk of developing malignant neoplasms. Oral cancer (OC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in the Brazilian population particularly among men over age of 40. It is important to emphasize that OC can be preceded by the development of lesions known as Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders (POMD). Although some studies have reported an association between DM2 and the risk of developing malignant neoplasms, few have sought, to date, an association between Actinic Cheilitis (AC) and DM2. In this Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the occurrence and association of AC in patients with DM2. This observational cross-sectional study will be conducted at the Stomatology Service of the Dentistry Department of UFRN. Patients will be evaluated to identify associations between the described outcomes. We believe that the results may provide relevant information to improve the clinical management of patients with DM2. In addition to the development of clinical follow-up protocols for these patients that seek early diagnosis of PMOD and OC, reducing mortality and public costs in the clinical management of these patients.
