SUMMARY:

The tympanoperiotic complex (T-P) is composed of two distinct bones, constituting the middle and inner ear of cetaceans. Studies about this complex are relevant to the knowledge of the morphological patterns of the species, since variations in the acoustic repertoire, habitat, behavior and size of the odontocetes, imply the variation of the anatomy of the auditory system and consequently its hearing capacity. In this context, the present study aimed to describe the morphology of the tympanic-periotic bones of 12 stranded cetacean species off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Brazil.  The animals were registered by the Cetaceans of Costa Branca Project (PCCB), in partnership with the Center for Environmental Studies and Monitoring (CEMAM), during the execution of beach monitoring projects, or through community actions. The strandings were georeferenced and included in a PCCB database. Specimens dead or died during rehabilitation had their tympanic complexes removed manually during necropsies or carcass analysis procedures, being identified in right and left and fixed in 10% formaldehyde or macerated. The collected specimens were categorized according to developmental phase, sex and species. A total of 148 T-P complexes were collected, totaling 74 pairs (right and left) of 74 cetacean individuals, distributed in 12 species: Feresa attenuata, Globicephala macrorhynchus, Grampus griseus, Kogia sima, Megaptera novaeangliae, Peponocephala electra, Pseudorca crassidens, Sotalia guianensis. attenuata, Stenella clymene, Stenella longirostris and Tursiops truncatus. The biometrics of the dried (macerated) complexes was performed, considering 24 measurements of each complex, using a digital caliper with 0.01mm accuracy. For leaflets in liquid medium, tomographic examinations are being performed to evaluate the volume of the T-P complex and volume and internal measures of the cochlea. In addition, histological analyzes of the cochlea epithelium are foreseen to evaluate
possible alterations resulting from seismic activities
