RESUMO:

Manatees are aquatic animals non-ruminant herbivores with a diversified diet. These animals are classified in the category "Endangered (EN)" by Brazil Red Book of Threatened Species of Fauna. Therefore, morphological studies of the digestive tract are relevant to assist in the knowledge of biology and the understanding of dietary habits in order to increase the conservation efforts of the species. In this context, the
present study aimed to analyze macro and microscopically the digestive tract of the Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) seeking to associate the findings with its habit and food biology. Samples were used from 14 animals that stranded in the northeast coast of Brazil and during the rehabilitation process in captivity between July of 1995 to March of 2017. The macroscopic analysis of the gastrointestinal tract was performed using the method of photoidentification from the necropsies image bank of the Projeto Cetáceos da Costa Branca da Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Norte. (PCCB-UERN). In order to evaluate microscopically, tissues collected during necropsy were fixed to 10% formalin and submitted to routine histological techniques. The cuts were made with a thickness of 5 μ of tissue fragments and subsequently submitted to the Hematoxylin-Eosin staining method (H.E.). The esophageal tissue fragments were also stained with the Verhoeff staining method with ferric hematoxylin. In this study, it was observed that the digestive tube of the marine manatee consists of esophagus, stomach with the presence of the cardiac gland in the dorsal portion of the cardiac region, duodenal ampoule with a pair of duodenal diverticula and a cecal body with a pair of cecal diverticula. The esophagus of the marine manatee presented stratified keratinized squamous epithelium and no esophageal glands were found. The cardinal gland is covered by simple cylindrical epithelium and the gastric glands contain major and parietal cells with the presence of lymph node between the lobes.
