RESUMO:

The bats act in different ways in regulating ecosystems, being essential its conservation. Given the scarcity of studies on their reproductive biology, particularly in males, and since this knowledge is critical to the rational management of the species, this study aimed to quantify the spermatogenic process of the bat Artibeus planirostris, as well their seasonal variations, by morphometric and morphological analysis of the testes. The animals were collected in the year of 2014 between the dry (n=9) and rainy seasons (n=9), on the central campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Natal-RN, Brazil). After euthanasia, the testes were collected and histologically processed for embedding in historesin and analysis under light microscopy, using the Image-Pro Plus® software. The results obtained on morphometry were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test, considering a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Considering the two seasons, the animals showed an averaged Gonadossomatic Index (GSI) of 0.47%, and the seminiferous tubules represented about 94% of testicular parenchyma, the remainder being represented by the intertubule. The seminiferous tubules were represented by about 28% of lumen, 60% of seminiferous epithelium and 5% tunica propria. Only the lumen changed significantly between the seasons evaluated, with the higher percentage found in the rainy season. The volume of the seminiferous epithelium averaged 0.17mL, resulting in a Tubulessomatic Index (TSI) of 0.42%. The tubular diameter and the seminiferous epithelium height had averages of 140μm and 43μm, respectively. Similarly, no significant differences were found between seasons for the morphometry of intertubular compartment. Thus, Leydig cells, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and connective tissue represented, respectively, about 21%, 4%, 8% and 67% of intertubule, and 1.6%, 0.3%, 1.1%, 5.4 % and 8.4% of the testes. It was obtained a Leydigosomatic Index (LSI) of 2.8%. It can be concluded that Artibeus planirostris presented testicular pattern similar to other mammals, high GSI, TSI, LSI and tubular length per gram of testis. The results revealed important data about the gonadal dynamics of these animals in the evaluated seasons.
