SUMMARY:

In the present work, pulses of electric current lasting between 50 µs and 100 µs were used to interrupt the microdischarges and, thus, control the electrolytic oxidation process by pulsed plasma of titanium (PPEO). The effect of pulse duration and treatment time were investigated in order to meet the requirements of a hypothetical scaffold-containing surface for drug delivery to titanium implants. It was verified that surfaces treated with a pulse duration of 50 µs presented more uniform pores and smaller average diameters. However, all samples treated with OPPE showed satisfactory values for good adhesion of osteoblastic cells and adequate volume for drug release. Although all surfaces had hydrophilic character, samples treated with longer treatment time and shorter pulse duration showed a higher polar component. With regard to cell adhesion, it was observed that in the treated samples, the cells presented anatomical characteristics more compatible with osseointegration. In this way, we show that PPEO is a promising technique in the fabrication of surfaces for titanium dental implants.
