SUMMARY:

Despite the discovery of a cure for syphilis in the late 1930s, it still represents a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. In addition to the notorious importance of notifying cases, assessing the quality of information is essential to support public policies related to coping with the disease. Thus, the study aimed to analyze the quality of the database of syphilis in pregnant women and congenital syphilis, in the period from 2007 to 2020, according to the completeness of the data and timeliness of notification. To this end, a time series was carried out with trend analysis that evaluated the quality of notifications about syphilis in pregnant women and congenital, in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), for Brazil and its regions, between 2007 and 2020. For completeness analysis, 19 fields from the congenital syphilis form and 9 from the syphilis in pregnant women were selected. The fields were considered complete when filled in with the requested information. Fields filled in as “ignored”, left blank by the professional responsible for filling them out or by the typist were considered incomplete. Completeness was classified according to the score recommended by the National Coordination of SINAN: excellent - above 90%; regular - 70 to 89%; bad - below 70%. For trend analysis of filling in the fields that make up the notification forms, Joinpoint regression was used. This model made it possible to analyze temporal trends, evaluating whether, at some inflection points of the log-linear model (joinpoints), there were changes in the observed trend pattern. The notification opportunity indicated the speed of obtaining information for action, in the case, knowledge of the case and notification in SINAN. Among the fields on the congenital syphilis notification form, only one did not show significant results. Among the remaining 18 fields, in the period studied, there was a trend towards an increase in completeness in 13 fields. Among the regions, the Southeast had the highest averages of annual percentage change. In the syphilis notification form in pregnant women, in turn, all 9 fields showed a significant trend towards increased completeness over the period studied. Being the Southeast region with the greatest tendency to fill in the selected fields.

The timeliness of notifying cases of congenital syphilis showed a significant reduction in the mean days between diagnosis and notification throughout the analyzed period (AAPC = -2.8573). In cases of syphilis in pregnant women, in turn, there was a reduction between 2010 and 2020 (APC = -3.2621).

In view of the above, it is concluded that the quality of information in data on congenital syphilis and in pregnant women in Brazil improved between 2007 and 2020. In addition to the reduction in the time between diagnosis and notification of cases. This is reflected in more assertive public policies in coping with the problem and in improving prenatal care.
