RESUMO:

Introduction: The parameters derived from electrical impedance, phase angle
(PA) and vectorial analysis of electrical bioimpedance (BIVA), have been
associated with cell membrane integrity and body cell mass. Zinc is known
as a micronutrient that exerts important structural functions, acting in the
maintenance of cellular functionality. To evaluate cell integrity and body cell
mass, PA and BIVA were measured in children supplemented with zinc at
different concentrations. Methods: Anthropometric, bioelectrical (resistance
and reactance) and serum zinc variables were collected from two
randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trials. Sampling was composed
of 72 children, grouped according to the zinc concentration in the
supplementation, forming three groups: control group, who received placebo,
and two experimental groups that received 5 or 10 mg/Zn/day along three
months. Results: The three groups showed improvement (p < 0.001) in the
weight-for-age and height-for-age indices. In the group supplemented with 10
mg/Zn/day, there was an increase in reactance values (p = 0.023) and PA (p
= 0.001), in addition to vector displacement (p < 0.0001) relation to the
confidence ellipses. The increase in serum zinc concentration was found (p
<0.0001) in three groups. Conclusion: Supplementation with 10 mg/Zn/day
promotes changes in the integrity of the cell membrane associated with the
increase in the cellular mass of healthy children.
