RESUMO:

Background: Titanium surfaces have been modified by different approaches in
order to improve the stimulation of the osseointegration. LASER beam (Yb-YAG)
treatment is a controllable and flexible approach to modify surfaces that creates a
complex surface topography, with micro and nano scaled patterns, increased oxide
layer that can improve osseointegration of implants increasing their usefulness as a
bone implant material.
Methods: Laser beam irradiation with 235 J/cm2 of fluency was used in the
commercially pure Titanium discs to create a complex surface topography. The MTT
assay, Mineralization Assay, Alkaline phospatase activity and qPCR for osteogenic
markers were performed to evaluate the behavior of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from
the umbilical cord vein.
Results: The results showed that titanium irradiated with laser beam at a fluency of
235 J/cm2 can modulates the behavior of mesenchymal stem cells. The up regulation
in the expression of the osteogenic markers and the enhanced Alkaline phospatase
activity evidenced that titanium irradiated with laser positively contributed to
osteogenesis.
Conclusions: The laser processed titanium surface seems to stimulate the
osteogenic differentiation, leading to an increase of osseointegration. This evidence
the potential of laser processed titanium surfaces as a bone implant material and its
use in regenerative medicine could promotes better outcomes.
