SUMMARY:

Literature on youth has highlighted the growing diversity in ways of being young, along with the possibility that, in the case of Brazil, some of these new trajectories may be shaped by inequalities. The same is observed regarding the transition to adult life, in which the trajectories of new generations of young people in the process of acquiring adult status diversify, both among themselves and in relation to previous generations. These differences, intra or intergenerational, can lead to highlighting 'non-transitions', such as the 'NEET generation' or the 'kangaroo generation', interpreting youth as a lack of interest and disregarding the role of obstacles relating to structural and cyclical aspects. The difficulties faced by young people in the job market, widely discussed as lasting and worsening in certain circumstances, affect the transition from the role of student to that of worker, and the resulting difficulty in acquiring financial independence can affect the transition through other markers, including home autonomy. In this context, this thesis seeks to contribute to the discussion about the different ways of being young, specifically based on the transition trajectories to adulthood in the Northeast region, which can be illustrative for the complexification of the youth category based on the mixture of new and conventional processes, as it continues to record greater vulnerabilities in relation to other regions in terms of demographic and economic, educational and insertion in the labor market dynamics. To this end, the question is: what is the influence of an unequal and uncertain context on the changes observed in the process of transition to adulthood at the transition from the 20th to the 21st century? This question is made up of other more specific ones, which favored the idealization of the research in three different essays. In general terms, the first essay aims to characterize the transition to adulthood in the Northeast region, while the second and third seek to demonstrate whether the labor market, through the period effect, contributes to the configuration of the trajectories that are marked, respectively, for the fact of not studying or working (NEET generation), and living with their parents at young adult ages (kangaroo generation). The main source of data to be used is microdata from the Demographic Censuses from 1991 to 2022. As main analysis methods the entropy analysis of synthetic cohorts (essay 1) and the APC (Age-Period-Cohort) with Multinomial Logit (essays 2 and 3) are used/proposed.
