SUMMARY:

The autonomy of the Central Bank means that monetary sovereignty is currently being debated to improve national monetary policy and, consequently, the country's economic policy. The Central Bank, the institution responsible for executing the country's monetary policy, has as its objectives the pursuit of controlled inflation, within the target stipulated by the National Monetary Council, for currency stability. To this end, the Selic rate is used as an instrument of monetary policy, increasing it when inflation rises or decreasing it to stimulate the economy with inflation stabilized within the target. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the principle of monetary sovereignty as a means of guaranteeing national development, through the autonomy of the Brazilian Central Bank, which guarantees more legal security for attracting investments in the country, allowing the expansion of the market and ensuring the preservation of the national currency, that is, the purchasing power of the population, thus strengthening free enterprise in the country. Aiming to achieve this objective, bibliographical, jurisprudence and legislation research was carried out using the deductive method and qualitative approach. Concluding, therefore, that national monetary sovereignty, through the autonomy of the Central Bank, is a fundamental point for the country's monetary stability in order to achieve the national development stipulated as a duty of the Brazilian State in art. 3, II, of the Federal Constitution.
