SUMMARY:
The Brazilian female prison system is complex as the rate of female incarceration has increased significantly in recent years, leading to overcrowding, deterioration of the physical environment of prison facilities, and a deficit in medical, legal, social, and psychological assistance services. Thus, the prison situation in the state of Rio Grande do Norte is not different from the national scenario despite the inadequacy and collapse of the system. In this context, considering that the human rights of incarcerated individuals are also enshrined in international documents of the Inter-American System of Human Rights Protection (SIPDH), it is evident that the problem of this research revolves around the following question: Does the Dr. João Chaves Penal Complex comply with human rights standards according to the Inter-American System of Human Rights Protection in order to protect the human rights of incarcerated women? The study is of utmost importance, as analyzing the compliance with the realization of these rights not only promotes social justice but is also in line with the international commitments assumed by Brazil in the field of human rights. The choice of the aforementioned prison unit occurred because it is the only female complex for serving sentences located in Natal/RN, which will allow a more detailed analysis of the reality experienced by the studied women. As an initial hypothesis, it is assumed that the state is creating alternatives to protect the human rights of women, however, there is still no effective compliance with and respect for the norms of the SIPDH in the Dr. João Chaves Penal Complex. Regarding the general objective, the aim is to evaluate, with support in the narratives of the incarcerated women themselves, whether their human rights are being respected in the Dr. João Chaves Penal Complex according to the human rights standards of the SIPDH. As methodological procedures, the nature of the research is applied, the hypothetical-deductive method is used, it has an exploratory objective and is presented as theoretical research; in the technical procedure, the choice is for bibliographic, documentary research, and empirical survey through the collection, organization, and analysis of the testimonies of incarcerated women. As a result, it is concluded that the state of Rio Grande do Norte still has a long way to go to effectively comply with the rights of incarcerated women in the Dr. João Chaves Penal Complex according to the SIPDH.
