SUMMARY:

The Industrial Revolution, which started in the 18th century, marked the beginning of the modern era and brought notable advancements for humanity, including mass production of goods and the invention of machines that made human work easier. However, the acceleration of production processes has also led to serious environmental problems, including climate change. Today, the climate crisis is a complex issue that requires integrated and collaborative solutions. Scientific evidence indicates that rising global temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, rising sea levels, and intensification of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and droughts, are all symptoms of this phenomenon affecting life across the planet. Research has emphasized the need to establish a regulatory legal framework for disasters in Brazil, which would standardize treatment given to extreme events and establish responsibilities, ensuring an effective response by the State and society. More sustainable practices and valuing environmental balance are necessary, requiring a paradigm shift and the attribution of legal protection to the climate. Legal protection is essential to ensure the environment is treated with the seriousness it deserves, contain climate change, and avoid natural disasters. The connection between natural disasters and climate change has been proven, revealing the need to review the search for economic development at the cost of the environment. Therefore, the climate crisis requires a paradigm shift and a new attitude from society and public authorities. It is necessary to adopt more sustainable practices, value environmental balance, and establish a regulatory legal framework for disasters in Brazil. Attributing legal protection to the climate and holding agents responsible for damage are key measures to ensure the protection of the environment and the well-being of present and future generations.
