SUMMARY:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm in the oral cavity. It can affect any anatomical site of the oral mucosa, with the tongue and floor being the most affected sites. Currently, the role of the tumor microenvironment with its cellular and non-cellular components in the development and progression of neoplasia has been demonstrated. Among the components of this microenvironment, some studies have pointed to the importance of cancer-associated fibroblasts, Tumor-associated macrophages and some proteins secreted in the extracellular matrix such as TGF-β and MMP-9 as possible indicators of aggressive behavior in OSCC. It is noteworthy that these studies are performed on pieces from excisional biopsies that are already part of the patient's treatment protocol. A question that arises is whether the analysis of these biomarkers in incisional biopsies performed at the time of tumor diagnosis could already signal the trend of more or less aggressive behavior of the lesion, allowing the selection of the most appropriate therapeutic protocols for the case. This research aims to analyze the immunoexpression of α-SMA, TGF-β, CD68, CD163 and MMP-9 in the tumor microenvironment in incisional biopsies of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) and oral floor (OFSCC), seeking possible associations with clinical prognostic indicators. The results of this experiment may contribute to a better understanding of the role of these proteins in the biological behavior of OSCCs.
