SUMMARY:

Introduction: The evolution of photopolymerizers in terms of their power and consequent reduction in clinical time has been shown to be of great value for optimizing routine orthodontic bracket surgery. However, there are no studies that provide scientific evidence that reinforces or proves the protection provided by blue light filters coupled to this equipment during clinical procedures. Objective: To evaluate the possible retinal effects of exposure to blue light emitted by a high-power LED photopolymerizing light curing device on the retina of Wistar rats protected by a blue light filter. Methodology: Nine Wistar rats (n = 6) will be used in the research and their ocular structures will be the objects of study. The animals will be divided into three groups (G1 - without exposure; G2 - exposure without protection and G3 - exposure with protection from the light filter of the Valo® photopolymerizer). During photostimulation of each animal, the eyes will be exposed to high-power LED light, 3200mW/cm2 (Valo® Ortho - Ultradent), for 144 seconds at 30cm. The animals will be exposed to LED three times for one day. At the end of seven days after exposure of the experimental groups, the animals will be anesthetized, euthanized, their eyes removed and processed histologically. The histologic sections will be digitized using a camera attached to an optical microscope and their images will be analyzed stereologically and histomorphometrically to measure the parameters of the retina under investigation.
