SUMMARY:

Studies report that the elderly population is expected to increase worldwide in the coming decades, this phenomenon is explained by the decrease in the mortality rate and increase in life expectancy. Allied to this, the number of oral problems in elderly people such as xerostomia, dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss and oral cancer is also on the rise. Oral health, which is part of general health, is of great importance in people's quality of life. Therefore, carrying out clinical/epidemiological assessments is indicated to provide early diagnosis of oral diseases and minimize the progression of oral and general health problems. Public policies have been aimed at the elderly, aiming to improve their quality of life. However, for initiatives like these and health actions to be carried out effectively, it is necessary to know the public and understand their specific needs. It is important to consider that the population residing in rural Brazil is also undergoing an aging process. However, it is worth noting that access to health services in these places may be compromised, which reflects on the quality of life of the elderly, mainly due to obstacles in locomotion and long distances, which makes clear the need to provide greater attention to health care to this specific public. Thus, this project intends to study tooth loss: associated factors and impact on the quality of life of elderly people living in rural areas. A sample of 285 elderly people will be evaluated, based on a raffle with the lists of elderly people provided by each Basic Health Unit in the city of São Bento/PB. Individuals will undergo oral clinical examination and questionnaire resolution. Data analysis will be carried out based on oral clinical findings from the results obtained by the participants' responses. Associated factors will be determined using the Chi-square test for a 95% confidence level.
