SUMMARY:

Introduction: Dental light-curing devices are constantly developing with the aim of reducing the duration of polymerization procedures for resin materials. A laser light-curing device was recently developed that emits light in the blue spectrum, taking advantage of the collimation, directionality and monochromatic characteristics of the laser for the polymerization of dental resins. However, there are no studies that point out the damaging effects of these devices on the professional’s retina, or that ensure the protection capacity of the filters used for these light sources. Objective: To evaluate the possible retinal effects of exposure to blue light emitted by a laser-based light curing device on the retina of Wistar rats, as well as the protective capacity of the ocular filter. Methodology: Nine Wistar rats will be used in the research and their ocular structures will be the study objects. 1/3 of the total number of eyes (n=6) will be subjected to acute exposure to laser curing light (Monet®, AMD lasers), receiving 3 daily incidences, for 24 seconds each, at a distance of 30 cm, simulating the distance operator's arm. Another 1/3 (n=6) of the sample will receive the same exposure protocol to the same light curing device but using an eye protection filter recommended by the manufacturer. The third group will not receive incidence of blue light, being considered the control group (n=6). At the end of seven days after exposure of the experimental groups, the animals will be anesthetized, euthanized, eyes removed and processed histologically. The histologic sections will be digitized using a camera attached to an optical microscope and their images will be analyzed stereologically and histomorphometrically to measure the parameters of the retina under investigation.
