The population that grows the most demographically is the elderly.  Considering the high prevalence of chronic diseases, which can lead to a decline in functional and cognitive capacity, an increase in the number of older adults living at home or even bedridden, with varying degrees of frailty, is expected.  In the oral environment, Candida albicans and many other Candida species form part of the supplementary microbiota of the human oral environment, but when the host immune system is compromised or predisposing local conditions exist, these fungi can cause both oral and systemic infection.  Knowing that the correct diagnosis and timely treatment of oral candidiasis, especially in the elderly, can prevent the progress of the infection, this project aims to study the prevalence of infection by Candida sp.  and associated factors in bedridden and domiciled elderly.  A sample of 385 elderly will be evaluated, based on a draw with the list of elderly people provided by each Basic Health Unit in the city of Natal/RN.  Individuals will undergo anamnesis and clinical examination and saliva collection from two methods, saliva stimulated with parafilm and swab for those who are unable to chew the parafilm.  Data analysis will be made from the presence or absence of the various species of Candida sp.  Associated factors will be determined using the Chi-square test for a 95% confidence level.  For significant variables, a robust Poisson regression will be performed to estimate the crude and adjusted prevalence ratio.
