SUMMARY:

Periodontitis is a chronic disease with a multifactorial inflammatory nature, which affects the dental protection and support tissues, whose etiology is associated with periodontopathogenic dental biofilm. The procedure of scaling and crown-root planing, associated or not with surgical periodontal therapy, is considered the gold standard treatment for this condition. However, in many cases, it is not enough to restore the patient's health condition. In this context, the possibility of using plant extracts as adjuncts to conventional periodontal therapy is highlighted. Among them, the hydroethanolic extract of Spondias mombin L. (EHSM) has been highlighted due to its antimicrobial efficacy against oral pathogens, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of EHSM in an experimental model of periodontitis. For this, a pre-clinical, in vivo, randomized and controlled trial was carried out, using 67 male Wistar rats, randomly distributed in the following groups: Group 1 (7 healthy animals + gavage with distilled water); Group 2 (15 animals with periodontitis + gavage with distilled water); Group 3 (15 animals with periodontitis + gavage with EHSM 50 mg/kg); Group 4 (15 animals with periodontitis + gavage with EHSM 100 mg/kg); Group 5 (15 animals with periodontitis + gavage with EHSM 200 mg/kg). Gavage was performed daily from the day of periodontitis induction (or equivalent) until the 11th experimental day (euthanasia). Gingival tissues were destined for analysis of cytokines, reduced glutathione and malondialdehyde, and RT-PCR. Maxillary tissues were submitted to histomorphometric, immunohistochemical and computed microtomographic analyses. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Parametric tests such as ANOVA will be used, followed by post Bonferrone test and non-parametric Kruskall-Waliis test. A significance level of 5% will be considered.
