SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: Secondary Burning Mouth (ABS) can be related to different diseases and conditions that affect the oral mucosa, or represent an oral manifestation of a systemic condition presented by the patient, and makes a differential diagnosis with Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS). OBJECTIVE: To carry out a case-control study to investigate whether there is an association between the complaint of burning mouth, diabetes, hypertension and the use of medications for these conditions. METHODS: Retrospective, case-control study, consisting of a group of patients with secondary burning mouth and another group consisting of patients with the same clinical-demographic characteristics without complaints of burning mouth. Clinical data will be collected from medical records treated at the Stomatology Service of UFRN, from January 2010 to December 2021. The statistical analysis procedure will be carried out by crossing the outcome variable, ABS, with the independent variables of interest (the presence of DM and Hypertension) and in relation to all confounding variables considered: ethnicity, time of evolution, location, smoking and alcohol consumption; in which the simple frequencies will be obtained, where the statistical differences will be evaluated through the Qui-Square test.
