SUMMARY:

Periodontal disease is characterized by a host-mediated inflammation associated with pathogens, which causes bone loss. It is commonly treated through basic, non-surgical periodontal therapy, in the form of debridement of the crown-radicular surface, being considered the gold standard in the treatment of periodontal disease. However, in some situations, such as in the control of deep periodontal pockets, which are difficult to access and with destruction and progression of the disease over time, adjuvant therapies have been indicated, giving rise to interest in probiotic therapy as an adjunct to basic periodontal therapy. In this sense, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the administration of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus EM1107 as an adjuvant to the basic periodontal treatment of ligature-induced periodontitis in mice. For the study, the model of induction of periodontal disease will be used by a ligature with 4.0 silk thread around the lower left second molar of mice. The animals will be divided into 4 groups: Group I: - PD – L - SRP; Group II: + PD – L - SRP; Group III: + PD – L + SRP; Group IV: + PD + LR + SRP. Analyzes will be performed with microtomography computed by X-ray transmission (micro-CT), histomorphometric and immunohistochemistry of periodontal tissues. The data will be analyzed and the results will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni test to compare the mean values between the groups. The Kruskal-Wallis test and the Dunn test will be used to compare medians.
