SUMMARY:

The family of growth inhibitors (inhibitor of growth - ING) corresponds to a group of tumor suppressor genes whose expression is altered or absent in several types of cancer. Its proteins are mainly related to six major cellular processes indispensable in carcinogenesis, such as chromatin remodeling, cell proliferation, DNA replication and repair, cell migration and angiogenesis. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate immunohistochemical expression of ING3 protein in actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinomas (LLSCC). For the present study, 50 cases of AC and 50 cases of LLSCC will be evaluated. AC cases will be classified histopathologically according to criteria recommended by WHO (EL-NAGGAR et al., 2017) and by Kujan et al. (2006). For LLSCCs, histopathological malignancy grading systems proposed by WHO (EL-NAGGAR et al., 2017) and Almangush et al. (2015). The immunohistochemical analysis will be quantitative, considering cell location (cytoplasmic, nuclear, or nucleo-cytoplasmic). Possible associations between immunoexpressions of ING3 and clinical-pathological parameters of studied lesions will be investigated, including locoregional recurrence, metastatic potential, and survival in cases of LLSCC. A significance level of 5% will be adopted for all statistical tests (p < 0.05). With results obtained in present study, it is intended to make progress on the understanding of lip carcinogenesis as the role of ING proteins in this process is better understood.
