SUMMARY:

The carcinogenesis process happens, in general, slowly, and it can take several years for a cancer cell to proliferate and give rise to a visible tumor. Before the appearance of carcinoma, most cases have lesions with a benign clinical aspect, but with considerable changes in cell proliferation and atypia, called epithelial dysplasias. Several mechanisms orchestrate this complex process, in which malignant cells acquire an aggressive phenotype that results in increased individual motility and the ability to invade surrounding tissues. This occurs through a regulatory and programmed process called epithelium-mesenchymal transition (TEM), which is crucial for the acquisition of this aggressive malignant phenotype. During this process, epithelial cells lose part of their characteristics and acquire others inherent to mesenchymal cells, a process controlled by several transcription factors inducing these alterations, giving in addition to the skills mentioned above, stem cell characteristics, resistance to anti- neoplastic, angiogenesis and survival. The aim of the present study is to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of the proteins Shh, Gli-1 and E-cadherin, which signal TEM in epithelial dysplasias and epidermoid carcinomas located in the oral language by. Possible associations between the expression of these proteins with the histopathological grading of epithelial dysplasias and with the different histopathological degrees, clinical aspects and survival in oral squamous cell carcinomas will be investigated. With the results obtained in this study, we intend to contribute to a better understanding of events that signal malignant transformation in lesions with this potential in oral language, in addition to advancing on the knowledge of the role of these TEM proteins as possible biomarkers of stages of carcinogenesis in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
