SUMMARY:

Stage III and IV grade C Periodontitis has demonstrated inscreasing interest due to its more destructive nature of the supporting periodontal tissues with possible tooth loss and masticatory disfunction, which may negatively reflect on the individual's quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the non-surgical treatment of stage III – IV, grade C Periodontitis, through the analysis of periodontal clinical parameters (Visible Plaque Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, Bleeding on Probing, Pocket Probing Depth, Gingival Recession, Clinical Attachment Level), occlusal (static and dynamic), microbiological, immunological and radiographic aspects; as well as to assess their impact on quality of life. METHODOLOGY: this study will be a clinical, controlled-randomized, double-blind trial, with a split-mouth design, with a sample of 46 participants. Initially, they will answer a questionnaire on Oral health-related quality of life - OHRQoL. Treatment will consist of: oral hygiene instrucions (baseline and follow-ups), scaling and root planing with the Full Mouth Disinfection (FMD) protocol, antibiotictherapy (Amoxicillin 500 mg + Metronidazole 250 mg at 8/8 hours for 14 days), 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash (12/12 hours for 14 days) and PDT divided by quadrants as follow: group 1- control (only FMD), group 2 (FMD + TFD in a single session), group 3 (FMD + TFD in four sessions), and group 4 (FMD + laser therapy with infrared light in four sessions). Assessments will be made at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. The data for all parameters will be analyzed statistically through parametric or non-parametric tests, depending on the data's normality to identify significant differences and associations.
