SUMMARY:

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a regulatory and programmed process crucial for the acquisition of an aggressive malignant tumor phenotype, is characterized by the loss of cell-cell junctions and cellular polarity, as well as the acquisition of migratory and invasive properties. The greater or lesser expression of proteins and inducing transcription factors involved in EMT are decisive for the beginning of the process of carcinogenesis and for the progression of oral cancer; however, they are still poorly understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the immunoexpression of E-cadherin, α-SMA, TGF-β and Snail proteins in epithelial dysplasias and lower lip squamous cell carcinomas. For the immunohistochemical study, cases of epithelial dysplasias and squamous cell carcinomas in the lower lip will be selected, in which the immunoexpression of the proteins E-cadherin, α-SMA, TGF-β and Snail will be analyzed. Possible associations between the pattern of expression of these proteins with the cytological and architectural changes of epithelial dysplasias in actinic cheilitis will be investigated, and with the different histopathological degrees, metastatic potential and survival in squamous cell carcinomas of the lower lip. With the results obtained in this study, it is intended to advance the understanding of events that signal malignant transformation in lesions with this potential in the lower lip, contributing to a better understanding of oral carcinogenesis and the role of the proteins studied in this process.
