SUMMARY:

The diagnosis and evaluation of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) becomes complex due to its multifactorial etiology and the variety of instruments available for this purpose. Many of them have methodological or logistical limitations, or else they are not reliable and valid, thus hindering the epidemiological survey of TMD in the country. This study aims to validate an Instrument for the Epidemiological Diagnosis of TMD - IDE / TMD, which is easily applicable to national epidemiological studies. This is a validation study and cross-sectional, which will continue the steps to obtain the validity of the IDE / DTM instrument, based on internal structure, reliability, criterion and convergent validity. Data collection will be conducted from December 2020 to December 2021, at the Department of Dentistry at UFRN, together with the service of the Integrated Care Center for People with Stomatognathic Apparatus Dysfunctions (CIADE). The sample will consist of CIADE users and the general population, aged over 18, selected for convenience. The sampling plan will obey a minimum proportion of 10 participants for each item of the instrument (12 items), totaling 120 individuals in the stage of the validity of the internal structure and reliability, this rule also will apply for criterion and convergent validity, being the total of subjects adjusted as the instrument is being evaluated. The validity of the internal structure will obtain from the confirmatory factor analysis. While the reliability, through the internal consistency given by the Cronbach's alpha value (α> 0.70), the reproducibility by the test-retest, calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC> 0.70), and the interobserver equivalence by weighted Kappa. In the criterion and convergent validity, the IDE / DTM will apply concerning the DC / TMD, the current gold standard in the diagnosis of TMD. The results of the instruments will correlate, and from that, the sensitivity and specificity values will be observed within the parameters considered ideal (CI> 95%) to obtain the validated version of the construct. As a result, it's expected the validation of an easy-to-use, simple and reliable assessment and diagnosis instrument that allows the identification of TMD in national epidemiological surveys, to build an unprecedented historical series of this disease in the country. Also to assist in the planning and creation of public policies for the identification, control, and treatment of TMD in the Unified Health System (SUS).
