SUMMARY:

Oral mucositis (OM) is an inflammation of the oral mucosa, quite prevalent in patients undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) has been proposed due to its preventive and therapeutic action, avoiding the risk of local and systemic infections and the interruption of antineoplastic treatment. Aim: To evaluate the result of the photobiomodulation protocol in the prevention and treatment of OM in patients undergoing HSCT. Materials and methods: A descriptive, prospective, observational study to assess the quality of the protocol used in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in a referral hospital for HSCT. The sample consisted of twenty-four patients who received previous dental treatment and PBM as a preventive protocol for oral mucositis. When diagnosed with grade ≥ II mucositis, patients received therapeutic PBM. Clinical analyzes of the degree of OM were performed during the conditioning regime, on D + 1, D + 5 and D + 10. The collected data were evaluated through indicators: presence of pain, reduction of pain intensity, use of analgesics, regression of the degree of mucositis, time of appearance of the lesion and use of other associated treatment. Baseline disease, type of transplant, type of chemotherapeutic conditioning, comorbidity index and absolute leukocyte count were collected from medical records. In addition, data on Laser parameters were obtained.
