SUMMARY:

Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a potentially malignant disorder that can develop into squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip (SCCLL). It is not yet well established which factors may be associated with the probability of malignant transformation of this condition, even though it is established that exposure to ultraviolet radiation is its main risk factor, as well as for SCCLL. Ultraviolet radiation causes oxidative damage to DNA, which results in the formation of 8-hydroxy-2′deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a protein that is associated with the process of carcinogenesis in some human neoplasms. This research aims to verify the expression of 8-OHdG in AC and to associate its expression with clinical-pathological parameters of a series of cases of QA. 58 cases of lesions with clinical diagnosis of AC were evaluated and were histopathologically classified according to the WHO grading system for dysplasia. Of these, there were 22 cases of mild epithelial dysplasia, 17 of moderate epithelial dysplasia, 11 of severe epithelial dysplasia and 7 had no dysplasia.. The analysis of the expression of 8-OHdG was performed in a semi-quantitative way by two examiners, calibrated and trained (Kappa 0.79). The non-parametric Mann-Withney test, with a significance level of 5% (p <0.05) will be used to assess the association of 8-OHDG expression with the WHO grading system for dysplasia.
