RESUMO:

Osteoporosis is the leading cause of fractures in the population over 60 years. It is a disease that affects the elderly and especially post-menopausal women, presenting a high morbidity and mortality rate. Because it has no symptoms, osteoporosis often remains undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. Although the diagnostic test is bone densitometry, there are radiomorphometric indices evaluated in panoramic radiographs that indicate reduction of bone mineral density. In addition to the use of tools such as FRAX, which determine the risk of fracture in 10 years based on certain clinical risk factors. The objective of this research is to evaluate the risk of bone fracture in elderly individuals, taked care at Imaging Service of  Federal University Department Dentistry, as well as the radiomorphometric indexes of the digital panoramic radiographs of the same; to investigate the association with variables of age, gender, body mass index, reported systemic diseases, medication use, history of fracture, habits, physical activity practice and number of teeth. The clinical data were collected at the time of the radiography, which was later analyzed by a single radiologist in order to determine the radiomorphometric indices and presence / absence of dental elements. The sample to date is 50 elderly, with a majority of women (68%), hypertensive (69%), presenting type 2 diabetes (31%), osteopenia (14%), osteoporosis (14%), reported fall in the last 6 months (22%), reported hip fractures in parents (14%), with regard to habits 70% do not consume alcoholic beverage, 45% are ex-smokers and 35% practice physical activity.
