RESUMO:

Introduction:The continuous search for improvements in dental equipment and optimization of clinical time of the dentist stimulated the evolution of light curing units (LCU), mainly in relation to the increase of their potency, reducing about 70% of the time of photopolymerization during the complete orthodontic bracket bonding. However, there is a lack in the literature of the possible effects that these high-power LED devices can exert on the retina who makes continuous use of these devices if no protection filter is used. Objective:To evaluate, in vivo study, the possible effects of the chronic use of a high potency LED light curing device on the retinas of Wistar rats. Material and methods:In this experimental study in vivo, six healthy male rats were used in the research, with their ocular structures being the objects of study. The left eyes of the animals were exposed to high potency LED light, 3200mW / cm2 (Valo Ortho - Ultradent), for 144 seconds at a distance of 30cm, three times a day, for 7 days. The right eyes were covered with removable PVC tampon, composing the control sample. On the eighth day, the animals were anesthetized, euthanized, the eyes dissected and histologically processed. The slides were scanned using a camera coupled to an optical microscope and their images analyzed stereologically and histomorphometrically. Results:The total volume of the retina (control = 0,664 ±0,088, experimental = 0,702 ±0,161) did not present a statistically significant difference (= 0,655). In relation to the layers, none of them presented statistical difference: ganglion (controlG = 0,107±0,019, experimentalG = 0,097±0,014) = 0,375, internal plexiform (controlPI = 0,195±0,017, experimentalPI = 0,217±0,044) = 0,327, internal nuclear (controlNI = 0,090±0,010, experimentalPI = 0,087±0,015) = 0,693, external plexiform (controlePE = 0,029±0,004, experimentalPE = 0,036±0,009) = 0,177, external nuclear (controleNE = 0,152±0,022, experimentalNE = 0,178±0,054) = 0,355 e, cones and rod extensions (controlePCB = 0,091±0,031, experimentalPI = 0,088±0,030) = 0,871. Conclusion:The risk of retinal damage from eye exposure to high power LED light is possible, but the results have shown great variability and should be analyzed with caution.
