INTRODUCTION: Treatment with herbal medicines aims to prevent and cure diseases or at least minimize their symptoms. It presents advantages as an affordable cost to the population and public health services; great availability of raw material. It also has a wide spectrum of pharmacological actions that include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anxiolytic, healing activities among others. PURPOSE: To investigate the dental surface alterations in relation to the cajá extract (Spondias mombin L.). METHODOLOGY: Firstly, the in vitro evaluation of the phytochemical prospection of the plant material, the determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), against Streptococcus mutans was evaluated. After the determination of the MIC, the samples were prepared where 30 human teeth were sectioned preserving the proximal ones in the dimensions 6.0x6.0 mm. The dental fragments were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10) according to the substances hydroethanolic extract at the concentration 1: 16 = 15.6 mg / ml, chlorhexidine 0.12% distilled water "for immersion for 1 minute, twice daily for 14 days. 30 samples were prepared for initial and final chromatic analysis using a VITA Easyshade® Compact spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed statistically by means of ANOVA (1 and 2 factors), Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey. RESULTS: ANOVA (1 factor) revealed that the "COR" factor was altered between groups. The hydroethanolic extract group (p = 0.000) showed statistically significant differences. While the chlorhexidine groups 0.12% and distilled water did not present statistically significant differences (p = 0.0012). In the Tukey test, for the extract group (14.78 ± 3.05A), chlorhexidine group (7.96 ± 3.34B), distilled water group (4.48 ± 0.86B). The hydroethanolic extract of S. mombin L. inhibited the growth of the bacterium Streptococcus mutans when used up to the 1:16 concentration corresponding to 15.6 mg / ml.
