SUMMARY:

The present study, entitled “Fantastic Tales: A Methodological Approach to Enhancing Reading and Writing in a 6th-Grade Classroom”, is part of a master’s research project conducted at Coronel Manoel Medeiros II State School, in the city of Japi, Rio Grande do Norte. The research aims to contribute to the development of students’ reading and writing skills through direct engagement with fantastic short stories, namely “A Vendedora de Sonhos” by Assucena Benevides Almeida, “Cavalo Imaginário” by Moacyr Scliar, and “Os Dragões” by Murilo Rubião.The development of this text is situated within the scope of qualitative research, as discussed by Bortoni-Ricardo (2008). From a methodological perspective, we adopted the action research approach proposed by Michel Thiollent (2011), as it encompasses both an existential and a social outlook, and advocates for the use of research as an active process aimed at addressing issues that arise within spaces of dialogue, such as the school environment. The didactic-pedagogical procedures are based on the application of the basic sequence proposed by Cosson (2016). As theoretical foundations, the study follows the principles put forward by Coelho (2000; 2011), Cosson (2011; 2016), Helder (1980), Magalhães and Zilberman (1987), Zilberman (1981), among others. The current educational context reveals that students still demonstrate significant limitations in their ability to consistently produce written and reading outputs. Nevertheless, this implementation plan aims to foster the development of new competencies—both in decoding and interpretation skills, and in the capacity to produce texts that reflect their sociocultural realities—now broadened by new horizons and possibilities. These experiences, whether real or imagined, may even approach, or take the form of, genuine literary productions. Thus, the intended success of this proposed approach stems from its processual and collaborative development, which can significantly enhance the decoding process through the breadth revealed by the literary text. This factor is crucial for enabling young learners to achieve greater proficiency and fluency in both reading and writing.
