SUMMARY:

The problem that motivates this research is how to educate readers in schools, since this has recently become a major challenge for educational institutions. This is a reality that concerns not only the public education system, but all the entities involved, since despite the collective efforts of the school, teachers and the entire school community, this problem has not been satisfactorily mitigated. This problem also involves socioeconomic barriers that affect access to books and reading materials, the diversity of reading skill levels within the same classroom and the need to align teaching practices with curricular competencies and expectations, including the challenge of maintaining students' interest in a world saturated with digital media and instant entertainment. Given the above, this assegment aims to investigate how the Basic Sequence (Cosson, 2009) with a focus on the short story genre can promote better development of reading skills in 5th grade students. Methodologically, this is a qualitative research approach (Bodgan; Biklen, 1994), of an interventional nature, along the lines of action research (Thiollent, 1986), with the setting of a municipal school in the city of Lajes Pintadas/RN. In theoretical terms, we adopted the contributions of Solé (1998), Antunes (2003), Gotilib (2006), Colomer (2007), Candido (2005), including the guidelines of the National Common Curricular Base (2018), among other theoretical supports. The preliminary results demonstrate that the activities of the basic sequence contribute substantially to improving the quality of reading stories by 5th grade students, which will certainly contribute to their formation as critical and proficient reading citizens.
