SUMMARY:

It is well-known that elementary school students, particularly in the final years, face many difficulties in written production, especially in the appropriate use of referential cohesion strategies to establish meaning relations between the parts of a text, contributing to the progression of ideas. Furthermore, traditional teaching practices related to this textual resource are still limited to grammatical classifications of cohesive devices, without considering other strategies by the enunciator, such as avoiding repetition of information, adding new information, or revealing their argumentative intent when they refer back to elements or summarize larger portions of the text. Given this issue, the present research has the general objective of analyzing the use of referential cohesive operations in the texts produced by students in an 8th-grade class at Joao de Fontes Rangel School, in the municipality of Tenorio-PB, through a proposal for teaching the writing of the news genre. For this, we used an action research methodology to investigate the cohesive problems inherent to textual production that emerge in the mentioned school setting. Thus, we aim to deepen and expand our knowledge related to our teaching reality and propose actions to intervene in it. For the planning of our didactic-pedagogical actions, we used the Didactic Sequence (DS) model, supported by the work of Dolz et al. (2004). For the study of the composition of the news genre, its linguistic aspects, and its production context, we relied on the contributions of Alves Filho (2011) and Faria (2004). To address referential anaphoric textual cohesion, we drew on the writings of Cavalcante (2003; 2011; 2012; 2014; 2022), Koch (2008; 2011; 2013), Marcuschi (2003), and Antunes (2005). The research corpus was generated from an interventionist approach focused on developing students' writing skills during the stages planned in the Didactic Sequence, which included reading activities, recognition of the structural organization of the news genre, the study of referential anaphoric cohesive operations responsible for the articulation of ideas in the text, initial production, final production, revision, and rewriting of the texts. The data discussion, observing the criterion of the use of anaphoric operators in the text, focused on the comparative analysis of the initial and final news productions, aiming to verify if our research question was answered—namely, whether the study of referential cohesive elements in the news genre can contribute to improving the writing skills of elementary school students. In this work, the news genre was configured as a privileged genre for understanding cohesive elements as organizers of textual surface elements and the possibilities of meaning they convey in the discursive plan. The news produced was displayed in a mural newspaper and stored on the class’s virtual blog.
