Deliverying "Everything" as Slice Services Established Across the Core-to-Edge-to-XEC-to-RAN Continuum in Telco-Clouds

5G operators and providers are constantly seeking new service models to stand out in a highly competitive market and increase profitability. The evolution of these services, which involves innovation and digital transformation, relies on the exploration of the Slicing concept. This enables the creation of logical network slices that can be tailored to different performance and quality of service requirements. In mobile networks, the OMS (Operation and Maintenance Support) plays a key role in assisting operators with maintaining the communication ecosystem, including Slicing. Current OMS solutions enable the provisioning of Network Slices (NWSs), focusing on delivering connectivity services and differentiated access. The recent Cloud-Network Slicing (CNS) concept was introduced to extend 5G infrastructure slicing, encompassing resources and services both at the core (cloud) and in transport and radio access networks (RAN). This opens new opportunities for operators and providers, particularly in telco-clouds. However, existing literature does not provide evidence of an OMS system compatible with CNS, which limits the expansion of telco-cloud business models and the delivery of innovative applications that allow society to fully leverage the potential of 5G mobile networks.
The proposed research aims to address this gap by developing MAESTRO, a pioneering OMS system capable of deploying CNSs in telco-cloud infrastructures. This deployment will be end-to-end, spanning from central cloud installations to the extreme edge (Extreme Edge Computing, XEC), traversing transport networks and RAN devices, thereby forming the core-to-edge-to-XEC-to-RAN continuum. Designed with cutting-edge technologies, MAESTRO transcends conventional solutions by integrating a marketplace vision into the 5G ecosystem's backend to promote the concept of Everything as a Service (EVaaS). EVaaS envisions enabling operators and providers to offer a wide variety of resources, services, and applications as a service, provisioned across the core-to-edge-to-XEC-to-RAN continuum and monetized. The system combines an intuitive frontend, which presents infrastructure details and marketplace offerings, with a graphical interface for automated CNS construction. Through this interface, users define the desired CNS structure (topology, resources, and services), and MAESTRO automatically generates templates and activates technologies responsible for the slice lifecycle. This approach positions MAESTRO as a central orchestrator for the telco-cloud ecosystem, ensuring customized CNS deployment across the core-to-edge-to-XEC-to-RAN continuum. Validation will occur on real testbeds, assessing functionality in simulated and real-world scenarios. The goal is to demonstrate its feasibility and potential to transform how operators utilize Slicing, accelerating the adoption of advanced mobile networks and innovative services like EVaaS.
