SUMMARY:

Objective: To evaluate the level of self-perceived knowledge and the adoption of good practices on postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) among health professionals before and after participating in the Obstetric Hemorrhage Prevention and Management Course - Zero Maternal Death from Hemorrhage Strategy (0MMxH) .
Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study, which evaluated the educational intervention offered by 0MMxH in a sample of 85 health professionals, including obstetricians, anesthesiologists and nurses, who participated in 0MMxH for at least one year.
Results: A Wilcoxon t test indicated a significant increase in the participants' self-perceived level of knowledge, before and after 0MMxH, for all content analyzed. With regard to the adoption of good practices in clinical management, the highest percentages of use after participating in the course were observed for shock index (83.5%), estimated blood loss (67.1%) and use of crystalloids heated for volume replacement (58.8%). However, reports of low or no knowledge remained, particularly regarding non-drug interventions for the management of PPH.
Conclusion: Health professionals recognized that they had achieved higher levels of knowledge about the contents covered in the 0MMxH Strategy. Content relating to non-pharmacological treatment of PPH represented the greatest need for professional training. Participation in the 0MMxH Strategy was recognized as determining the adoption of good practices incorporated into the management of PPH. The significant change in professional conduct brought about by training plays a crucial role in health education and the continuous improvement of obstetric care.
