Precepting is a new teaching modality in the clinical practice education where the health professional takes on the responsibility of welcoming, guiding, showing and inducting the student into the real-world work environment. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the potentialities and challenges in the exercise of preceptory in the nurse internship program of nursing graduation. The descriptive study was carried out with a qualitative approach in May and June of 2018 in a University Hospital of Reference in the Northeast of Brazil. The sample consisted of 21 nurses who were precepting nursing students of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). For the empirical research, a semi-structured script was used, consisting of 14 questions, divided in two parts: the professional 's characterization and difficulties experienced by the nurses in the exercise of the preceptory and their potentialities. The study was approved by the institution where the study was developed and by the research ethics committee of the HUOL under the number of 80784017.7.0000.5292. The data were analyzed using the proposed analysis of content (theoretical reference) of Bardin which allowed the results to be grouped intofour categories: potentialities, difficulties, suggestions and experiences. From our results, it can be concludedthat the preparation of the student for the workplace is challenging. However, this work is being consolidated and shows a perspective change in the teaching and training model of health professionals. Alceste 4.9 software was also used and the lexical analysis of the content delimited four categories, three of them grouped in axis two and one in axis one. As a result of this study, a standard operating procedure was proposed for the internship program of nursing students in their mandatory supervised stage.
