The aging of the Brazilian population has been accelerating in recent years, and this phenomenon demands changes in society regarding an increasing number of people who need special care. In this context, medical courses try to adapt to the new reality by inserting geriatric and gerontology contents into their syllabus. This new situation also requires more and better services specialized in the care of the elderly. With this in mind, a post-discharge care service was set up for elderly people from the Hospital Regional de Caicó in order to improve the care provided to this population, as well as to create a practical learning scenario for the training of EMCM / UFRN Health professionals. The ambulatory clinic operates at the Seridó Regional Hospital once a week with an average of 5 to 10 visits, with patients referred by hospital professionals (doctors, nurses and social workers). The appointment is done under the supervision of the physician and professor specialized in Geriatrics with the help of resident physicians of medical clinic and students of medical graduation from EMCM / UFRN. At the opportunity, patients receive geronto-geriatric care and students can experience and train the peculiarities of the elderly patient care. In operation for about 2 years, the service has already enabled almost a hundred visits to this profile of the elderly and served as a model for the implementation of the General Geriatrics ambulatory clinic in the municipality of Caicó-RN in partnership with UFRN / EMCM.
