SUMMARY:

This dissertation seeks to analyze and problematize the use of harmonics as a pedagogical resource and as a strategy to facilitate performance in the upper register of the transverse flute – an instrument whose technique is directly related to its own harmonic series. Throughout this process, the investigation also aims to systematize practices and approaches employed in different contexts, contributing to an understanding that remains in continuous development regarding their application in both educational and performative settings. The research further includes the practical application of these concepts through an analysis of Fantaisie Brillante sur des thèmes de Carmen by François Borne, in which several excerpts are examined to demonstrate how harmonics can serve as practical solutions for executing rapid and technically demanding passages written in the flute’s upper register. The methodology encompasses practical analyses derived from two data-collection procedures: objective questionnaires administered to flutists, and interviews conducted with ten teachers from different generations and regions of Brazil, forming a body of data that contributes to the proposed reflection. The results indicate that the incorporation of harmonics not only facilitates technical execution but may also function as a broadly transferable resource to any work presenting similar technical-performative challenges in the flute’s upper register. The study suggests that the mastery of harmonics may contribute to the enhancement of flute performance, particularly regarding technical refinement and the expansion of interpretative strategies. The findings also point to the possibility of systematizing this resource in pedagogical materials and employing it in a variety of performance contexts, indicating that harmonics may progressively integrate the pedagogical organization of advanced study programs.
