SUMMARY:

This study aims to carry out a comparative analysis of the works The Daily Dozen (1925), Op. 20 (The Twelve Dailies), by D. C. Dounis; Urstudien (1911) (Basic Studies); and Problems of Tone Production in Violin (1934), by Carl Flesch. It seeks to establish differences and similarities among these works, to identify the level of difficulty of the proposed exercises, and to investigate their historical and pedagogical origins, thereby establishing parameters for their application. Aspects related to the maintenance of basic violin technique will be addressed, with a focus on the development of a training pathway based on an evolutionary progression of the analyzed exercises. Although this study concentrates on these two authors, concepts by Lucien Capet, Ivan Galamian, and Simon Fischer will also be employed. Contemporary violin performance still relies on these methods, which represent, to a certain extent, the result of more than four hundred years of evolution of both the instrument and the technique required to play it. The pedagogues Dounis and Flesch hold significant importance in twentieth-century violin teaching. The prominent generation of violinists connected, directly or indirectly, to these two masters constitutes irrefutable evidence of the value of their contributions to violin pedagogy worldwide. Over more than 25 years of teaching experience, I have developed an evolutionary framework for the level of difficulty of the exercises found in the cited works, in addition to creating new technical exercises—both preparatory and more advanced—with the aim of achieving greater effectiveness in students’ technical and performance outcomes. In addition to the works mentioned, I discuss, based on my experience, issues affecting the upper limbs that may arise from the improper use of certain exercises, establishing a logical framework for their application that facilitates the teacher’s work and proposing a line of thought oriented toward the creation of new exercises. In this way, the study seeks to address the specific needs of each student, to foster creative capacity, and to promote autonomy in solving technical problems, with the aim of improving performance.
