THE TRANSCRIPTION OF LHASA (ALEXANDRE ATMARAMA): A COLLABORATIVE WRITING
PROCESS
Guitar. Alexandre Atmarama. Musical Transcription. Artistic Research. Performance
The research focuses on the piece "Lhasa," for solo guitar, by the Brazilian composer
Alexandre Atmarama (artistic name of Alexandre Magno Abreu de Góes, born in 1962 in
Natal/RN). The work exists only as a recording, released as a bonus track on the album
IMALT (2008), with no corresponding sheet music. The study investigates the musical writing
of an originally phonographic work through a process of collaborative transcription. The
researcher drafted a score based on listening to the recording and, in an interview conducted
in 2021, adjusted the notation with the composer using the MuseScore software. Concepts
such as artistic research, phonogram as an inscription of the work, descriptive and
prescriptive transcription, as well as the relationship between composition and performance,
are mobilized.
