RESUMO:
Among the clay minerals widely studied and applied in the area of ceramics and other areas, has highlighted kaolinite, due to their characteristics and technological performance. By virtue of their applications as a raw material was held a study on the Kaolin potential of pegmatitic Seridó region. The State of Rio Grande do Norte, has a great potential in the exploitation of this mineral, where the main form of extraction is engross.Kaolin this region are characterized as interperizada primary origin, due to their training and local characteristics, differentiating it from the kaolin from other regions. In this work the obtained kaolin was subjected to a thermal treatment where it was observed a gradual amorphization of the crystalline structure characteristic of the material. Obtaining the amorphous form in the laboratory, also known as metakaolin, allowed an investigation into the front pozzolanic features to other already established material in the market. However, this work aims to investigate the amorphization of industrial kaolin, originating from pegmatitic Seridó region, and compare their pozzolanic activity with a widely used commercial metakaolin. For this, we used the techniques of Fluorescence X-ray (XRF); X-Ray Diffraction (XRD); Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG); Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA); Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); Laser Particle Size; Density and Pozzolanic Activity index with the Cal. After the characterizations it was observed that the metakaolin originating from region under study possesses good chemical and mineralogical characteristics, obtaining a good degree of amorphization at low temperatures and next examined the particle size distribution commercial material. From the result of the pozzolanic activity metakaolin obtained in laboratory showed a great potential in the formation of hydrated phases, of major importance in cementing area, among others.
