Walter Benjamin has argued that writing and printing, with the advent of modernity, caused light words—once vertical, erect, in voices, mouths, babbles, and the fervor of orality—to “rest,” “lie down,” grovel themselves, and retreat into the brains of a book, a letter, a piece of paper, while simultaneously obliterating themselves in the “oblique repose of desks,” in the silence of libraries. But the philosopher also warned us that, slowly, in the folds and ruptures of time-space, words—taken from their rest and once again shouted in the streets, read vertically, disputed in urban space, thrown into the vertical chance, into the other—began to announce other ways of life, other social relations, and the commercial practices of a bourgeois, mercantile society, rooted in the fetish of the economic. Words, therefore, have returned to the streets! Like “a swarm of locusts,” they began to occupy the landscape, the horizon, the vertical, the surplus of people’s vision; thus, at the same time that a new world was announced and disputed, it was also produced, constructed, and erected by language, for space and cities are constructs of the order of discourse. This is a landscape that, because it is language, has the power to create; it is, therefore, an enunciative landscape, populated by concrete utterances. This is what I defend as my thesis in this investigative endeavor. Therefore, I propose to problematize and analyze what meanings are indexed and created in/by the enunciative-discursive landscape of the cities Delmiro Gouveia, Olho D'Água do Casado, and Piranhas (AL), and what worldings, animacities, and sertanizations they produce in these cities of the high sertão of Alagoas. Thus, by understanding the Northeast as an invention and the sertão as its synonymous correlate, I seek to comprehend and problematize the role of these enunciative landscapes in the thematization of the territory through the traces and ruins they establish alongside historicity. The research corpus was generated through procedural ethnocartographic exercises that aimed to capture, in photographs-actions, the utterances situated in the landscape of these cities, specifically those that have as their supposed referent and thematic content the Northeast/sertão/semi-arid region or that contribute to the understanding of cities and territory. Given the above, my epistemological path is anchored in areas of linguistic-discursive studies, such as linguistic landscape (Blommaert, 2023; Shohamy and Gorter, 2009) and Applied Linguistics, specifically in a critical-transgressive and radically undisciplinary Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes, 2013; Fabrício, 2017; Santos Filho, 2024; Pennycook, 2010, 2024), which does not seek to establish explanations about a given in the world, but to produce contestations, dismantle scenes, desacralize, unlearn, constrain what is intended to be natural and essential, as well as generate laughter, theoretical imaginations and problematize the imbrication between discursive and social practices that dialogically move and affect. Likewise, from a perspective of radical indisciplinarity, I proceed in epistemic copulas with the pedagogy of cities, the historiography of spaces in Albuquerque Jr. (2009, 2011, 2014), geography in Marc-Besse (2014) and Petit (2024), and language studies in Bakhtin (2011, 2016, 2017) and Voloshinov (2018, 2019). Thus, I point out that it is from the Circle’s studies that the
methodological procedure of analysis derives: an enunciative-discursive reading/analysis based on what has been consolidated as Dialogical Analysis of Discourse (DAD). In dialogue with the procedural ethnocartographic exercises, I problematize my own imbrication with the research object, my responsiveness, and my other-word in comparison with the utterances in the landscape, proceeding to analyze the utterances according to three dimensions: (1) the sphere of human activity in which they emerge; (2) the identification and problematization of discourse genres; and (3) stylistic arrangements. I would like to emphasize that, in an interdisciplinary stance, I deepen the reading with an interactive approach to textual linguistics so as to, in the coupling of theories, problematize the “structural entrails of the utterance,” textuality in its global aspects, and investigate its participation and verbal-ideological intervention in the world. Preliminary results indicate that in the enunciative landscape of cities there are traces of the thematization of a “sertão” that seems to have never passed, linked to the hegemonic discursive matrix that established it as dry, poor, and lacking, but also as a model of a class society, based on myths like Lampião, which reverberates with signs of nostalgia both for the created and indexed “macheza” and for the class society itself. There is, therefore, a discursive device of sertanizations, in a “centripetal” orientation, which is entangled in each utterance in the landscape and seems to form a whole, massifying the already stratified meanings of territory.
