ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: PAPILIONOIDEA) FOR RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
Tropical forests; Papilionoidea; identification guide.
Butterflies, in addition to their ecological importance and charisma, are excellent bioindicators due to their relatively short life cycle, sensitivity to microhabitats, and ease of sampling. The species richness of this group is greater in the Neotropical region, despite collection efforts being lower than in other regions. In Brazil, despite recent efforts, the northeast region still lacks butterfly collections. The Rio Grande do Norte (RN) is composed of the Caatinga (Ca) and Atlantic Forest (AF) domains. The AF is a global biodiversity hotspot. The CA, on the other hand, has a high rate of endemism. The Linean and Wallacean knowledge gaps (GLand GW) are the lack of taxonomic knowledge and distribution of taxa, respectively. Both are considered impediments to species conservation. The objectives of this study were: i) to inventory the butterfly fauna of RN, compiling records and collecting specimens in sampling gaps; and ii) to produce an annotated checklist of butterflies occurring in RN, consisting of biological information on: conservation status; species occurrence; seasonality; host plant; diagnosis and diagnostic images. The collections were carried out in the Assú National Forest (Flona). In total, 3,155 specimens belonging to 149 species were identified for the state. 1,912, distributed among 44 species, were recorded in the Assú National Forest.
