SUMMARY:

Myriostoma is a genus of gasteroid fungus popularly known as “pepper pot earthstar” They are cosmopolitan organisms that play an important role in the decomposition of substrates such as wood and litter. Myriostoma is considered rare, and until 2017 it had monospecific genus status. It currently has six known species, one of which is listed on the IUCN Red List in more than 20 European countries. However, there is no update on the geographical distribution of Myriostoma in databases or in ecological studies of potential distribution that could enable more robust conservation plans; nor are there any biogeographical studies, which are fundamental to understanding the biogeographical processes of origin and dispersion of species. Thus, we aim to identify the main environmental factors that contributed to the diversification patterns of the genus through phylogenetic analyses for biogeographic reconstructions and dating. We also aim to model the ecological niche of Myriostoma by testing climatic influences (current and future). Through our analyses, the results obtained were four new species (not yet named): Myriostoma sp nov 1, Myriostoma sp nov 2, Myriostoma sp nov 3, and Myriostoma sp nov 4; three potential new species; and three new records of M. capillisporum for the African continent. In addition to dating the origin of the genus and the divergence times of Myriostoma species. It is also expected to infer the dispersion routes of Myriostoma clades, correlating morphological characters with local adaptations to habitats; obtain the occurrence map of Myriostoma and the potential distribution of taxa, identifying the climatic conditions essential for the occurrence of the species.
