SUMMARY:

This dissertation analyzes the formation and consolidation of the Brasília Teimosa community, in Natal (RN), between 1958 and 1968, with the aim of understanding the historical and socioeconomic dynamics that shaped this territory and reveal the contradictions of local urbanization. Grounded in Urban History, the research draws on the theoretical framework of the production of space and the right to the city as developed by Henri Lefebvre, articulated with the understanding of property as a social construct and the role of discourse in producing meanings about popular territories. Methodologically, the study is based on the analysis of journalistic sources, institutional documents, maps, and oral interviews, allowing for the articulation of representations and lived experiences of the residents. The results show that Brasília Teimosa emerged in a context of intense urbanization, population growth, and insufficient housing policies, being formed by workers and migrants who resorted to informal occupation as a strategy for accessing housing. Throughout the period, the community was subjected to successive attempts of removal by the municipal government, revealing exclusionary urban projects. It is concluded that Brasília Teimosa does not constitute an anomaly, but rather an expression of the contradictions of urban modernization.
