SUMMARY:
The theme of this research is the formation of two spaces that, with different initiatives in their organization and objectives, had in common the grouping of people who migrated from their homelands and rural origins to the municipality of Crato, in the interior of the state of Ceará. We are talking about the community of Caldeirão da Santa Cruz do Deserto, created in 1926 and definitively destroyed by the State in 1938, and the Buriti Concentration Camp, created during the drought of 1932 and having its activities closed down in 1933. The perspective of our analysis is that, despite being forged differently, both spaces, which were even contemporary experiences between the drought years of 1932 and 1933, had common characteristics, especially with regard to the people who were there, people of backland origin, who at that time were seen as a hindrance to the moment of transformation that Brazilian society was going through. To study these two spaces is to study the history of the sertanejos who migrated, either to a rural space where they could have other forms of existence in which the workers enjoyed their own work, which did not happen on the estates where the farmers maintained a relationship of land ownership aimed at the market and merchandise, or by migrating to the city to also seek a new way of life different from the one these workers were used to in the countryside. Our work considers concepts such as racism, necropolitics, biopower and the state of exception. To this end, we will discuss theories based on authors such as Achille Mbembe, Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. What we see is that even in bourgeois democracy there is a project that naturalizes and normalizes the state of exception in a particular segment of society, where anything is possible, including taking the lives of people considered by the ruling classes to be undesirable or the basic conditions of their existence, as well as promoting the exposure of bodies to death. To this end, we will work with a variety of sources such as newspapers of the time, eugenics bulletins, pronouncements and documentaries.
