SUMMARY:

This thesis analyzes the process of territorialization of the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos, located in the sertão of Rio Grande do Norte, between 1821 and the 1870s. The initial temporal milestone corresponds to the year in which the parish was established, while the subsequent decades provide the basis for understanding territorial formation, the spiritual support provided to parishioners, as well as both internal organization – through brotherhoods and confraternities – and external organization – through desobrigas (pastoral visits to outlying areas), and also societal mobility, family formation, and daily life. With regard to its spatial scope, this research focuses on the sertão of Açu and its river valley – more specifically its right bank – where the parish church, dedicated to Santa Ana, was established in the settlement of Santa Ana do Pé da Serra (1821) and, later, the Constitutional Village of Santa Ana do Matos (1836). This study adopts the methodological approaches of the Evidential Paradigm, and also Micro-History, Serial History, and Quantitative History; alongside cartographic representation using the spot mapping method to process, analyze, and cross-reference several categories of sources, namely: administrative documents (petitions and sesmaria land grants, records from the Board of Conscience and Military Orders, population maps of Rio Grande do Norte); judicial records (Book of Transcriptions and Conveyances from the Registry of Santana do Matos, post-mortem inventories); and religious records (baptismal, marriage, and death records, as well as account books from the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento and Irmandade de Santa Ana). This work has its theoretical basis on the concepts of socially produced space and territorialization (Henri Lefebvre); territory (Antônio Carlos Robert de Moraes); territoriality (Robert Sack); christianization of space (Cláudia Damasceno); and hagiotoponyms (Maria Valentina do Amaral Dick). The central argument is that the occupation of the right bank of the Açu River by cattle ranches, the practice of desobrigas in this territory, and the subsequent construction of chapels were the primary factors responsible for organizing and establishing social relations in the process of territorialization in the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos. Consequently, by regarding the parish as a mechanism for spatial control and appropriation, this thesis focused on understanding the process of territorialization of the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos, located in the Açu River valley, another sertão dedicated to the grandmother of Jesus in the hinterlands of Rio Grande do Norte.
