SUMMARY:

This Thesis investigates the royal Funerary Space of the early 19th Dynasty, taking as its
focus the tomb of Seti I (KV17), constructed in the Valley of the Kings, behind the mountain
on the western bank of Thebes, present-day Luxor, Egypt. The research, grounded in our
updated perspective on the Theory of Material Engagement, analyses the various funerary
discourses present within this space as cognitive, material and historical resources in which
the beliefs of the period were organised into narratives integrating structural, iconographic
and textual elements. Each of the discourses has been translated into Portuguese and
examined in this Thesis. The Amduat organises the nocturnal solar journey and the
procedural logic of the Beyond; the Gates regulate access, transformations and temporalities; the Litany of Re expands the forms of divine manifestation and the mobility of the deceased;
the Celestial Cow reorganises the cosmos following the massacre and redefines the
relationships between power, order and violence; and the Astronomical Text situates the
pharaoh in the sky, ensuring his permanence among the visible and invisible cycles of time.
Each funerary discourse defines specific forms of circulation, knowledge and agency,
articulating visions of time, space and eternity. Our thesis asserts that these texts construct a
dynamic Beyond, wherein writing, images and structure are fundamental and intrinsically
linked to spatiality and ritual, highlighting the plurality and complementarity of the paths of
the Beyond. We have divided this Thesis into three volumes: the first contains seven chapters
analysing this Funerary Space; the second is a catalogue of all the walls of Seti I’s tomb; the
third comprises the funerary discourses translated into Portuguese (Amduat, Gates, Celestial
Cow, Litany of Re, Ritual of Opening the Mouth, Litany of the Eye of Horus and
Astronomical Text). Thus, Seti I’s tomb is understood as a veritable map of the Beyond, an
active and performative space in which the pharaoh never ceases to walk, to know and to
exist, sustaining an eternity constructed through the articulation of multiple funerary
discourses.
