SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to investigate the formation of the collection of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte (IHGRN) based on the offertas published in the Institute’s journal between 1902 and 1927. The collection is understood not merely as a repository of documents but as a medium capable of fostering a network of sociability around the Institute and acting as a fundamental instrument of knowledge in the production of place and state identity at the turn of the twentieth century. The study engages with concepts from Cultural History and adopts Jean-François Sirinelli’s notion of the intellectual, viewing the IHGRN’s members as mediators between culture and politics. It also draws on Yi-Fu Tuan’s concept of space and place to investigate how the undifferentiated space of Rio Grande do Norte was transformed into place as it was endowed with meaning and value by the Institute’s scholars. The sources examined include the Revista do IHGRN, legislative acts, decrees and governors’ messages, the newspaper A Republica, and the Dicionário Histórico-Biográfico da Primeira República (1889–1930), which together made it possible to outline the socio-professional profile of the founders and to identify the political legitimation strategies of the Albuquerque Maranhão group. The analysis demonstrates that the actions of IHGRN’s members—focused on collecting, organizing, and publishing documents—not only preserved traces of the past but also represented an effort to consolidate the Institute as the center of state knowledge and to affirm a degree of protagonism and centrality for the city of Natal.
